Proverbs 18:15 reminds us that “the heart of the discerning acquires knowledge for the ears of the wise seek it out.” Bahamas Academy has set as its goal to encourage our students to seek knowledge diligently through various sources. The goal is being met as we recently opened and dedicated the Dr. Ruth White and Mary Brennen Library and Media Center. This library seeks to provide quality literature and resources while encouraging a love of reading, science, and technology.

Parents can do the same at home by:

  • Building a library in your home- this should include books of different genres and cover a wide variety of topics.
  • Modeling reading for enjoyment, finding information, and solving problems.
  • Allowing your child to choose books that they find interesting. Emphasize that reading can just be for fun.
  • Reading as a family. Set aside time to read an engaging book and discuss it together.
  • Using the Bible as a tool! When referring to certain themes, ideas, or principles from the Bible, find the reference and read it with your child.

Research has shown that children who grow up with a home library are more likely to continue their education beyond high school and even a library of twenty books can cultivate a culture of reading and learning. School libraries can have a tremendous impact on students’ achievement and also contribute to positive self-esteem, confidence, and a sense of responsibility.

Bahamas Academy has resolved to promote literacy in our school and community through the continued improvement of our library. The month of February has been designated Literacy Month, under the theme “Discovering the World Around Us.” Each week students engage in activities that promote literacy and encourage them to learn about the world around them. On February 8, 2022, World Ocean Day Youth Advisor, Myah Greene spoke to the students about the dangers of climate change and actions they may take to restore our environment. Every Thursday this month, mystery readers will visit classrooms in the elementary and Early Learning Center, and on February 16, 2023, at 5:30 pm, there will be a grand Family Literacy Night filled with books, science, and technology.

The environment of a child at home or school should be filled with books if our goal is to cultivate a love of reading and learning. This love of literacy and reliance on God’s word will aid in the creation of a bright future for our children.
