Seventh-day Adventists believe that the gift of prophecy was manifested in the life and writings of Ellen G. White. While her writings are not considered to be a part of the Bible, they serve as a source of comfort and guidance to the Remnant Church.

Her counsel while often given to individuals, has been found to be of benefit to the world-wide body within the Seventh-day Adventist church.

Instruction on Various Matters

Ellen White wrote on many subjects and the Adventist Church has been the beneficiary of this counsel, of which the following serves as an example:

Health – Her guidance has led to the Adventist church having a worldwide health system that emphasizes wholistic medicine. Her counsel on diet, “pharmaceuticals”, and healthy living should be noted as by inspiration she was instructed on principles which have been scientifically validated today.

Faith – A central theme of her writings points to faith in Christ and principles that lead to godly living. She has given counsel to the Church that is still appreciated and sought after over one hundred years after her death. Her book Steps to Christ has been translated into over one hundred languages and considered an important aid in leading others to Christ as well as developing character for the believer. Her book “The Great Controversy” has been a source of inspiration to many in understanding the last day events and preparing for them.

Education – Seventh-day Adventist have a unique perspective on education thanks to the writings of Ellen White. It is through her influence that we emphasize the 4th “R” of education, “Redemption.” The true goal of education is to rebuild the image of God in humanity. Thanks to her advice, we emphasize the triage of home, school, and church in the spiritual formation of children.

Balance – When her advice is sought and followed it creates balance as she often gave practical, commonsense advice recognizing the difference between the real and ideal situation.

As we come to a better understanding of the process of inspiration it should give us a better understanding and appreciation of the gift given to the Seventh-day Adventist Church through the writings of Ellen White.
