A month of literacy began at Bahamas Academy on February 13th, 2024, with visits to lower primary classrooms by the Centreville Women’s Ministries Department. Donations to the library and classrooms were made. Elementary students also participated in a Story Walk, which allowed them to merge the outdoors and a good book as they got moving while reading.

Students got a chance to participate in a Living Library, on February 20th, 2024, as they checked out an expert in various fields. Visitors included Atlantis’ Aquatic Unit, The Honorable Bacchus Rolle, news reporter Joshua Williams, straw worker Lorene Clarke, Bahamas Air pilots Steffon and Vashti Bowe, student athlete Theo Bowe, author Desmond Deal, musician Ricardo Johnson, and Bahamian historian Barbara Wilson.

The celebration continued under the theme “Let’s Get Wild About Reading,” on Thursday, February 29th, 2024, with a grand literacy night. Parents and students gathered at the Marshall Road campus for a night of fun and reading. Students dressed in pajamas visited four stations that encouraged them to get creative, have fun, and learn new words. Each station was centered on a book with engaging activities. At the end of the evening, everyone gathered in the quadrangle for a final story.

The night ended with students and parents excited about reading!
Literacy Month concluded with a Literacy Workshop for parents of students in K3- Grade 3. The workshop was conducted by Mrs. Lynn Smith, a Reading Interventionist and Dyslexia Educator. Parents discussed literacy skills that should be mastered by students at each grade level and symptoms of dyslexia.
