A Message of Thanks

Today marks two weeks since Hurricane Dorian battered the northern Bahamas as a Category 5 storm with winds of more than 185 mph. This storm, which has been described as the strongest landfall on record, decimated portions of the Islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama. As we reflect, still amid the impact of this disaster, we pause again to give thanks to God for His tremendous acts of mercy, for had it not been for his grace and mercy, our situation in The Bahamas would have been worse.

The outpouring of support, care, and concern from persons and organizations within the Bahamas as well as internationally have been outstanding.

We wish to express our most humble and sincere thanks to all who have rendered any level of help, outreach or assistance with our relief efforts. In our Sabbath School lesson this quarter, we have been reminded in Matthew 25:40 that “……the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, In as much as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me”.

Your church, through its various Departments and Agencies, has been true to its mission and mandate as recorded in the above scriptural passage. We have joined forces with our Union and International Agencies such as ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Agency), to assist our brethren and those in the wider community who have been severely affected, by shipping to them pallets of water, food, and clothing. In addition, we continue in our efforts to provide for the needs of our brothers and sisters who have evacuated from the affected islands and are currently housed in shelters and other accommodations here in Nassau.

We anticipate that our relief efforts will no doubt be ongoing for a while.

The South Bahamas Conference (SBC) has also partnered with the Bahamas Government’s Social Services Department by allowing them the use of the Bahamas Academy’s Gymnatorium on Wulff Road as a shelter for the maximum number of evacuees that it can accommodate. As such, the Department of Social Services has sole responsibility for the housing and meals for the occupants of this shelter. The South Bahamas Conference will be on hand to provide the necessary assistance as requested. The Adventist Disaster and Relief Agency (ADRA) is soliciting volunteers to assist them with their relief efforts. If you wish to volunteer, and would like more information, please call 603-1530 or contact the Pastor of your respective churches and they would be able to assist you.

Our Inter-American Division leaders will be in Nassau to meet with all Adventist Evacuees and Volunteers on this Sabbath afternoon at 4:30 p.m. at the Hillview church. All who are involved in providing any type of assistance are also invited to attend.

As mentioned in my message last week, God has never failed us in the past, and He will not do so now, because “God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things, having all you need, you will abound in every good work”, 2 Corinthians 9:8.

May God continue to bless us all, as we “live the gospel” by being the eyes, feet, hands, and voice of Jesus in this time of tremendous challenge and need.

Pastor Kenny Deveaux, President, South Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.
