Lovable, Warm, Inviting, Friendly, Inclusive.

These are just a few words that should describe every Sabbath School.

Have you ever visited a church and felt that you were the only person who knew that you were there?

On a more positive note, have you visited a Sanctuary and received such a cordial welcome that it made you feel right at home? I’ve had both experiences, but I choose to relate the most pleasant one.

While attending an event in Chicago several years ago, I decided to visit a church. After taking a train, a bus, and a ten-minute walk in the cold, snowy weather, I was relieved to enter the warm church building. As I entered, not only the warm temperature embraced me, but the smiles, hugs, and warm greetings of the welcoming team made me feel right at home. They accommodated me in every way possible; inviting me to the fellowship meal and even took me to the train station when the fellowship was finished. Fifteen years later, I still recall the warm welcome I received. I felt so blessed that even though I was far from home, I still had a family that cared.

Every Sabbath School should foster an atmosphere of warmth and friendliness; and every guest that walks through the doors of our churches should be able to say, “I would love to return”.

The success of the Sabbath School depends largely on the entire team, whose attitudes should reflect that of Jesus Christ. God’s plan is for every Sabbath School to be a soul-winning agency and a great power for evangelism. It should be noted that the growth and vibrancy of the church depend largely on the Sabbath School.

Here are some very important DOs in creating a cordial atmosphere and welcoming our guests.

DO take the job seriously as a faithful steward of God.

DO show a winsome Christian smile as you greet others.

DO wear appropriate attire.

DO conduct your behavior in a Christ-like manner.

DO show a genuine interest in others.

DO greet your guests promptly and accommodate them as needed.

DO have a Guest welcome registry and recognize each guest by name.

DO invite your guests to the fellowship meal and other activities of the church.

DO provide a follow-up with a telephone call to inquire about their wellbeing.

A friendly, growing Sabbath School contributes to a friendly, growing church. Every member is a part of the greeting team and should be properly trained in providing hospitality to our visiting friends. Paul reminds us in Hebrews 13:2 that we must not forget to show hospitality to strangers, because by doing so, some people have ministered to angels without knowing it. Let us make every effort to win and grow our Sabbath Schools by being cordial and attractive, and as a result, winning souls to the kingdom of God.
