PASTOR APPRECIATION MONTH

The month of October within Christendom has been designated as a specific time for officially honouring pastors and those persons who perform ministerial work. Christians globally call this month Clergy Appreciation Month. Many professions have designated times during a given year when they are honoured and so in a similar light those engaged in pastoral ministry have the privilege of being officially honoured in October. This is not new; the genesis of a formal Clergy Appreciation began in the early 1990s. Using 1 Timothy 5:12 & 17 as a foundation, the event soon became widely referred to as Pastor’s Appreciation.

The General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists has suggested the second Saturday of the month for this well-deserved tribute to our pastors. However, the scheduled date within the month is not a “law of the Medes and Persians”; therefore, flexibility exists to facilitate any conflict of a scheduled event. Also, where a pastor may have a multi-pastoral district, this is taken into account. Thus, within the Atlantic Caribbean Union the last Sabbath in October for this year 2019, was calendared for Pastor Appreciation Day.

Each local congregation during this month should try and make certain that special opportunity is given to thank, affirm and recognize your church pastor and the family for their dedicated service. Consider your pastor: preacher of righteousness; administrator of the local church; shepherding the flock/members in a caring and loving manner; teacher and trainer who equips the saints in service and ministries; overseeing the wellbeing of the church and its various systems/departments; restorer, rescuer and reconciler of those who have wandered away from the fold or who have become apathetic.

On the designated Sabbath, it is appropriate to honour the pastor and the pastoral family through any or more of the following suggested ways (as gleaned from the Elders Digest):

  1. Make plans to celebrate Pastor’s Appreciation Day.
  2. Say a public word of appreciation for the pastoral ministry.
  3. Dedicate a special prayer to pastors and their families.
  4. Interview the pastoral family.
  5. Present a song that the pastoral family appreciates most.
  6. Write a letter or prepare a special card signed by church members/officers.
  7. Offer a gift in the name of the church.
  8. Invite the pastoral family to a meal.
  9. Call, text, email, or send encouraging messages through social media to your pastor and family on that day.
  10. Plan a special fellowship reception hosted by the church.
  11. Download, advertise and place the suggested poster on “Pastor’s Appreciation Day” in your church or organization to create awareness.

What matters most through the month and on Pastor’s Appreciation Day is the gratitude and recognition from the local congregation and other church entities. Pastors are spiritual leaders—make this day special for them!
